ANANTAPUR: In a tragic incident, three persons including a brother and his sister drowned in Galeru Nagari Sujala Shravanthi canal at Alavalapadu village in Vempalli mandal of YSR Kadapa district on Sunday. The deceased were Sushanthi, 8, Teja and their relative Gnanaiah, 25.

Sushanthi and Teja were residing with their grandmother after the death of their mother in the village. Gnanaih, 25, came to celebrate Easter eve at Alavalapadu. The three, along with paternal uncle Sashikumar went swimming in the GNSS canal on the outskirts of the village.

Sashikumar did not assess the depth of water in the canal and allowed the children to swim. Sushanthi and Teja drowned in the water while Gnanaiah tried to rescue them but he too was drawn in by the swirling waters. Sashikumar managed to save himself from the currents.

The locals in the vicinity heard the cries and rushed to the spot but failed to rescue the three. They helped in the retrieval of the bodies from the canal. A police team that rushed to the spot shifted the bodies to a hospital for post-mortem.
