Rare surgery gives new lease of life to patient
VIJAYAWADA: Doctors at Top Stars Hospital gave a new life to a moribund patient by performing a rare dysphagia aortica surgery.
Addressing media here on Saturday, hospital’s senior surgeon Dr. (Prof) Arun Kumar Haridas explained that 67-year-old Akunuru Raghava Rao from Tadigadapa had been suffering from the uncommon condition of difficulty in swallowing even a drop of water. Diagnosis showed a large 10x10x15 cm aortic aneurysm in the left chest, which compressed the oesophagus and stopped him from swallowing even liquids.
Dr. Arun Kumar said the risk of surgery was high, as the patient’s heart was weak because of blocks in the heart. A team of doctors took up the unique and challenging surgery for 12 hours. Post surgery, the patient’s condition has improved and the ventilator removed. The patient has even started eating without any problems.
Patient Raghava Rao has thanked Dr. Arun Kumar, hospital chairman Srinivas Tatineni, Dr. Yalaga Srinivasu and team for giving him a new lease of life.
