Villagers object to obscene dances during Urs

The dances by girls in skimpy dress were obsene and an insult to devotees proceeding on their pilgrimage from Karnataka to Srisailam

KURNOOL: A dirty dance programme at Krishnapuram village in Atmakur during an Urs programme at the local dargah on Thursday drew flak from pilgrims on their way to Srisailam. The dances by girls in skimpy dress were obsene and an insult to devotees proceeding on their pilgrimate from Karnataka to Srisailam, a villager maintained.

When contacted Atmakur sub-inspector Nagendra Prasad said he has no knowledge about the incident. Replying to a question, he said that no permission has been sought by organisers of the urs to hold any such programme. Circle inspector Krishnaiah too said he is unaware of the incident.

Krishnapuram village is about nine kilometres from Atmakur. It is being alleged that police officials are aware of the dance programme but are feigning ignorance as Srisailam MLA Silpa Chakrapani Reddy had visited the village Thursday evening and offered prayers at the dargah.

Nagaraju Naidu, an advocate of the area underlined that obscene dances are prohibited under Representation of Woman (Prohibition) Act, 1981. The inaction of police in Atmakur division has been brought to the attention of district superintendent of police Kaginelli Fakkeerappa, it is stated.
