The Supreme Court on Friday has allowed private companies to undertake mineral sand mining in coastal areas of Kerala.

KOCHI: CPM politburo member MA Baby has opposed the Supreme Court verdict granting permission for the private sector in mineral sand mining from the coastal areas in Kerala.
The mineral sand in Kerala is having radioactive elements that could be harnessed for nuclear energy, he said, and added that allowing private sector into such a sensitive area also poses a threat to national security.
Mr. Baby also expressed concern over the increasing tendency of the judiciary to pass judgments supporting projects representing unbridled capitalist development. The Supreme Court on Friday has allowed private companies to undertake mineral sand mining in coastal areas of Kerala.
