Thiruvananthapuram: The decision of the HRD ministry to do away with the weightage for Plus Two marks for Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) for IITs from 2017 has once again opened up the debate on continuing such a practice in the state entrance.
The present system of allotting 40 percent weightage to Class 12 marks for determining ranks for JEE. However, as per the decision, the students would need to have at least 75 percent marks or be in top 20 percentile in Class 12 examination while SC/ST students would have 65 percent marks.
Many students have been complaining that giving weightage in the state entrance was giving the advantage to state syllabus students due to liberal valuations.
This year, the tough questions at the Standard XII examinations of the CBSE have created doubt whether it would influence the prospects of students at the state engineering entrance exams.
This was because the rank list for the state entrance exams is being prepared by adding the marks in the 12th standard examinations and that of the admission tests.
CBSE/ICSE parents’ forum coordinator Dr N. K. Sanilkumar told Deccan Chronicle that the time was ripe for reopening a debate on doing away with the weigthage to Plus Two students.
