Tamil Nadu: Moral education in schools to combat indiscipline
Chennai: Faced with growing incidence of campus violence, at times even targeting the teachers, the state government has chosen to bring back 'moral studies' into classrooms hoping to inculcate in the students the vital values of discipline and showing respect to teachers. A 30-minute session in the morning has been introduced in over 16,000 schools across the state in the first instance, according to school education minister K.A.Sengottaiyan.
The moral education project, called 'value-integrated teaching and learning' was getting huge positive response from the schools as well as parents, the minister said. He was speaking at the 25th anniversary celebration of St. John's International Residential School (SJIRS) at Palanjur near here on Friday. Sengottaiyan said the state had set a record by launching a 'helpline' for the students (14417) to guide them to the right choices for campus courses and career options. Senior Principal, SJIRS, Dr R. Kishore Kumar, recalled the challenges faced by the institution since its launch 25 years ago and expressed the satisfaction that now the school had students not only from all over India but also from 21 foreign countries.
