Calicut University panel against entry punching for researchers

The attendance will now be calculated from the markings in the register.

KOZHIKODE: The Calicut University Syndicate subcommittee which examined reports of the academic committee and pro-vice chancellor on punching system for research scholars has found it unnecessary. The report submitted on Tuesday also recommends the release of their fellowship amount withheld over the issue for the last many months. The attendance will now be calculated from the markings in the register.

Former vice-chancellor Dr M. Abdul Salam ordered the system and to give fellowship amount based on it in October 2013. It sparked wide-scale protests when they launched 24-hour research strike occupying the library, turning the University into a battlefield for many months. After Dr K. Mohammed Basheer had taken over a committee of teachers headed by Dr Fathimath Zuhara K. was formed to examine and recommended its withdrawal.

The university also sought a report from PVC Dr P. Mohan, which is reportedly supporting the system. To examine both reports and to reach a conclusion, the varsity constituted the panel with Dr P. Sivadasan, Prof C.P. Chithra and Dr K.M. Naseer as members. With the final report getting approved, the three-year long issue of biometric punching would have curtains down.
