Hyderabad: Harasser made to hold SHE' poster

Raheem was earlier arrested by the SHE team for harassing the woman.

Hyderabad: A local court on Monday punished a man by making him stand with a SHE team poster at Gunpark traffic signal opposite the Assembly for harassing a married woman by repeatedly calling her on the phone.

The court asked M.A. Raheem, 39, a resident of Moulali, to pay a small fine and work for the whole day on a campaign against harassing women. Raheem was earlier arrested by the SHE team for harassing the woman.

“He used to call the woman continuously. She changed her mobile phone number several times because of his harassment. But he would find her new number and call her again. When she stopped using her phone, Raheem started calling her husband asking him to hand the phone to her,” said a senior official from the SHE team.

Because of his calls, the marital relationship between the victim and her husband was affected, police said. “When they went to a counsellor, they were asked to approach the SHE team. That is how the woman lodged a complaint with us,” added the official.

The SHE team arrested Raheem and produced him before the court. The Fourth Special Metropolitan Magistrate, Nampally, convicted Raheem and asked him to campaign against harassment by standing with SHE team posters at the Gunpark traffic junction for an entire day.

PD act on man for harassing
A 24-year-old year man who was arrested by the Rachakonda police for harassing an employee of an international bank was detained under the Preventive Detention Act. The orders were issued by the police on Monday against Jeevan Aharwar Sharma.

Police said the victim and Sharma were natives of Ramagundam in Peddapalli district; they had become friends when she was doing her post-graduation in the town. After completing her studies, she got a job in the international bank and shifted to Hyderabad. Jeevan who was running a small company in Ramagundam began harassing her for marriage and sent her a series of messages on her mobile.

She approached the police in April 2016 but the harassment only increased. After she lodged a complaint in September, the police arrested Sharma and opened a suspect sheet against him. He came out on bail and continued to harass the victim over phone, police said.

He also posted personal information about the victim on Facebook. Going by a fresh complaint, the police registered a case under the IT Act and arrested Sharma from his house in Ramagundam. He was sent to remand to remand on Friday. On Tuesday Rachakonda commissioner Mahesh Bhagawat invoked the PD Act against Sharma and the orders were served to him in prison.
