Kerala: Decision on Maoists' bodies today

It was on November 24 that the duo was gunned down in an “encounterâ€with police in the Karulayi forests in Nilambur.

KOZHIKODE: With the High Court dismissing the petition submitted by rights organizations and Sreedharan, brother of Kuppu Devaraj, seeking a re-postmortem of the dead bodies of two Maoist leaders Kuppu Devarajan, 60 and Ajitha, 46, the other day, the police will take a final decision on the release of the bodies on Friday. It was on November 24 that the duo was gunned down in an “encounter” with police in the Karulayi forests in Nilambur.

Police sources told DC that the body of Kuppu Devarajan would be released to relatives whereas the possibility of releasing Ajitha’s body to Vinayakam was remote. K Vinayakam, a Chennai-based Maoist activist, landed here claiming that he had married Ajitha back in 2002. Police would allow him to identify her as he had cited many identification features including surgery marks on the left leg/ stomach and marks of an accident. Mr Vinayakam also alleged that Ajitha was unable to walk and carry any weight.

A politburo member of the Communist Party Marxist-Leninist (ML) People’s Liberation Vinayakam claimed that he and Ajitha had lived together since their marriage in 2002. The police had granted the prayer of relatives on November 26, after the postmortem, to keep the bodies for two days and later the Sessions Court, Manjeri had directed them to keep the bodies in the mortuary till December 5, as relatives wanted to seek legal remedies including a re-postmortem.
