Handcuffing of protesting farmers: NHRC orders action in 8 weeks

Civil rights body chief Muppalla Subba Rao objects to filing of SC, ST Atrocity cases against farmers

VIJAYAWADA: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to take necessary actions in eight weeks in the Amaravati handcuffing incident.

On November 24, the police handcuffed seven farmers while shifting them to the district jail in Guntur from Narasaraopet sub-jail. AP Civil Liberties Association state president Muppalla Subba Rao lodged a complaint with NHRC objecting to the handcuffing and NHRC issued orders in its response.

Subba Rao said that the arrested farmers were demanding that Amaravati be the solo capital of the state but the police arrested them and further registered cases under SC, ST Atrocity (Prevention) Act, which is severely objectionable.

He said that the police had violated laws by handcuffing as this was a severe violation of human rights. He said that APCLA filed a petition in NHRC about the humiliation meted out to farmers.

Subba Rao said that NHRC issued directions to chief secretary and APDGP to take action in the handcuffing incident within eight weeks.
