High alert at Sabarimala temple

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: About 35 high definition surveillance cameras and drones will enhance security at Sabarimala during this pilgrimage season, even as the Centre has raised a fresh security alert. According to sources, the Union home minister had forwarded an alert from the Intelligence Bureau on chances of extremists creating unrest in the hill shrine. The alert was receive about two days back, even as the police was making elaborate security arrangements.

Apart from the normal security arrangements, 35 high definition surveillance cameras with night vision facility has been installed at various crucial points right from the parking areas to Sannidhanan. The infrared based cameras could be zoomed, tilted and viewed from control rooms in Pampa, Sannidhanam and the office of IG Thiruvananthapuram-range. “We will be also using the service of camera fitted drones (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) for surveillance purposes," said IG Thiruvananthapuram-range Manoj Abraham. He also said that the normal security facilities like door frame metal detectors and baggage x-ray would be in place during this year also.
