Telecast of Christian programme near Durga temple raises a storm

Case booked against officially-appointed private channel for disrupting live telecast of Dasara puja

VIJAYAWADA: Police booked a case on charges of an LED display of a Christian programme near the Kanaka Durga temple flouting all norms Thursday night.

According to one town police, as Dasara festivities had commenced at the temple, the I&PR department engaged ‘C Channel’ to telecast Dasara puja live and also cultural programmes by setting up two LED displays near the temple premises for the benefit of devotees.

However, at about 8 pm, the live screening was suddenly stopped on one of the channels and a Christian programme was telecast for some time. Devotees complained to the temple authorities while some people pelted stones at the LED and damaged it.

Durga temple executive officer D. Bramaramba lodged a complaint on the issue with one town police station, who booked a case under Section 295 (A) of IPC dealing with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.

Meanwhile, the temple VHP leaders met the EO and sought action against the culprits. The EO assured of launching measures to avoid such acts in the future.

Later in a statement, Bramaramba said that a complaint was lodged against ‘C Channel’ and also against Nizamabad-based Keerti Taranga Creations, which was entrusted with the task of arranging LED displays.
