Cusat ragging: Internal probe reaches nowhere
Kochi: Despite the Kalamassery police asking the CUSAT (Cochin University of Science and Technology) authorities to submit findings of an internal probe into the ragging charges on a war-footing, the investigation by the Special Ragging Cell has reached nowhere. “It will take another 10 days to complete the probe. We’re conducting a detailed probe into the complaint of the first year civil engineering student,” said S. David Peter, university registrar.
The probe by the three-member University Ragging Monitoring Cell started on September 30, based on the complaint by Muhammed Sherin that third year students assaulted him in front of his classmates and teachers. “We’ve submitted a written request to provide us a report after a quick internal probe. The delay citing holidays next week cannot be justified,” said S. Jayakrishnan, circle inspector, Kalamassery.
Meanwhile, the victim Sherin, who had attempted suicide over the incident earlier, said the students and the teachers who had seen the seniors beating him up are not coming forward to provide eyewitness account before the probe team. Sherin had attempted suicide on September 27 and later claimed that he was assaulted by members of SFI for attending classes when a strike had been called. The police has so far made only a single arrest, that too on assault charges only.
