Construction of high level bridge over Godavari in Peddapalli yet to start

KARIMNAGAR: Even though tendering process for the ₹164 crore high-level bridge on Godavari River at Basant Nagar in Peddapalli district has been completed two months ago, its construction is yet to start.

The 1.5-km bridge, downstream of Sripada Yellampalli Project (SYP), from Basant Nagar national highway at Peddapalli to Mancherial town through Anthargam is a long cherished dream of people of both united Karimnagar and Adilabad districts.

After survey and testing soil condition at the place, so that the proposed bridge can withstand opening of floodgates of SYP, officials sent proposals to the government for constructing the bridge at a cost of ₹164 crore. The government okayed the proposal and also sanctioned the money, instructing Roads and Buildings department to commence the process of constructing the bridge.

There are no issues with regard to land acquisition at Basant Nagar in Peddapalli district. There are, however, obstacles in acquiring land in Mancherial town, as the bridge will link to the bypass road in the town. The issues are expected to be resolved without any problems.

At present, people of Adilabad district, who have strong business links with Karimnagar district, are forced to take the longer route from Luxettipet to Mancherial, Godavarikhani, Ramagundam and Peddapalli to cross the Godavari River and reach Karimnagar district.

People of both the districts have for the past two decades been demanding a bridge across Godavari, so that their travel time could come down. With tenders being called for construction, the bridge, once constructed, will cut down the distance between Karimnagar and Adilabad by around 25–30 kilometres. Motorists on the Peddapalli and Mancherial route can use the bridge to travel via Anthargam.

Incidentally, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, addressing a gathering at Mancherial during 2018 assembly polls had promised to construct a bridge across Godavari River for convenience of the public.
