Trans people win hearts of Chennaites with \'Go Corona Go\' number

The GCC came up with the idea of using trans people to spread awareness back in June in association with NGOs such as Thozhi and Sahodaran

Chennai: Transgender volunteers recruited by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to spread awareness of social distancing norms are winning the hearts of the people of Chennai with their story-telling songs.

Their story-telling methods are drawing the attention of hundreds of people in the streets of Chennai.

While they perform folk songs and dances like Kolattom, their latest 'Go Corona Go' item (a mock rhyme that went viral online in March during the lockdown) composed to the tune of Villupaattu (bow song) has been a huge hit.

The team of trans-people go to the streets with traditional musical instruments and stage half-hour awareness programmes in front of temples.

People are so attracted to the song that they croon along while keeping social distance.

The GCC came up with the idea of using trans people to spread awareness back in June in association with NGOs such as Thozhi and Sahodaran.

“We have been part of the awareness campaign for two months. Our “Go Corona Go” number has been a hit with people because it makes them laugh. Our teams go door to door to raise awareness about COVID-19,” said a trans-woman.
