GHMC app to cut food wastage
Hyderabad: GHMC on Thursday launched an app, ‘Feed the Need’, through which users can call the corporation to pick up leftover food. The service is free.
The app is aimed at reducing wastage of food by 20 per cent in the city with support from non-government organisations. It is estimated that up to 30 per cent of food gets wasted every day. This is informally disposed of or collected by GHMC vehicles.
‘Feed the Need’ app facilitates the collection of excess food from hotels, homes, function halls and and online food suppliers.
The GHMC has 30 refrigirators where excess food can be donated for those who needed it.
When a subscriber reports the availability of food, it is picked up by volunteers who deposit it in the refrigerators. The app is available on Google Play Store for download. The app was devleoped by a startup Rathh, founded by IIT Kanpur almnus Ashtosh Kumar Buddhiraju. The idea was partnered by Environment Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), and distribution of food would be looked after by NGOs and corporate partners including Robinhood Army, Feed in Need and Uber Eats.
