Chaos at corporation meet over Sitaram Yechury attack

Parties across political lines condemned the incident including the BJP members.

KOZHIKODE: The corporation council on Thursday condemned the attack on CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury in New Delhi despite strong opposition by BJP members. Parties across political lines condemned the incident including the BJP members, however, the name ‘Sangh Parivar’ mentioned in the resolution was opposed by the BJP party council party leader Nambidi Narayanan. Though he requested that the word be removed, Town Planning Standing Committee Chairman MC Anil Kumar who presented the resolution, refused to do so forcing the BJP members to vote against it.

Congress councillor P M Niyas said that dealing with differing ideologies with violence should be avoided at all levels including those in Kannur to which CPM’s Radhakrishnan Master said attacks in Kannur and the attack against the national leader could not be compared. JD(U) leader Kishan Chand , IUML leader C Abdu Rahman and Congress leader P M Suresh Babu also spoke during the discussion.

The council in a resolution congratulated the state government for implementing rules to teach Malayalam in all schools till 10th standard. The resolution, presented by T V Lalitha Prabha, also requested the government to take action to implement the rule in Kendriya Vidyalayas in the state. The resolution on beef ban created chaos in the council as the BJP members protested saying the resolution was creating a misunderstanding among people. The resolution presented by CPM councillor C K Seenath said that the union government gazette imposing restrictions on slaughtering was a challenge against the federal system and requested the government to withdraw it. The council passed the resolution with the BJP opposing it.
