Government quota in medical seats: No end to confusion

Earlier this year, private colleges agreed to surrender 40% of their total intake for state government CET students.

Bengaluru: Though Higher Education Minister T.B. Jayachandra had on Tuesday said that he would be meeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday to discuss on resolving the confusion surrounding government-quota seats in private medical and dental colleges, no such meeting was held.

After the Supreme Court’s order on the mandatory NEET for medical and dental admissions, private medical and dental colleges in the state have decided not to surrender 40% of their seats to government CET students. This has caused anxiety among students regarding the seat matrix this year.

Earlier this year, private colleges agreed to surrender 40% of their total intake for state government CET students. This meant that government CET students would lose around 750 medical and 1,500 dental seats in private colleges.

With the online seat allotment date (June 14) fast approaching, worried students expected an amicable solution, with the Law and Higher Education Minister Mr. TB Jayachandra on Tuesday giving assurances of resolving the crisis by holding a meeting with the CM.
