Jishnu Pranoy death: Ministers fault Mahija's protest

Ms Shailaja said the family should have avoided the protest in front of police headquarters.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ministers G. Sudhakaran and K.K. Shailaja on Saturday said Mahija and her family members should have avoided the protest in front of the police headquarters on April 5. Mr Sudhakaran said Mahija should have had a confidential meeting with DGP rather than making the issue public. He refuted the charge that the incident had dented LDF government’s image. “There is a deliberate attempt to create crisis for the government. But we will not succumb to such tactics,” he told a regional news channel.

Ms Shailaja said the family should have avoided the protest in front of police headquarters. “It was not needed at all especially when the Chief Minister had personally met Mahija and assured all help from the government side,” she said. The minister said two main accused had already been arrested. The Chief Minister had considered their demands sympathetically hence the family should have waited patiently, she said.

She said a section of people are using Jishnu’s mother for their vested political interests. The minister said the visuals in front of the police headquarters clearly pointed out that Mahija was not dragged along the road by police as was being alleged. However, if there are allegations against the police, the home department should look into it and take appropriate action.
