THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Oracle has announced its plans to set up an incubator in Thiruvananthapuram. The global IT major is planning to set up nine Oracle Startup Cloud Accelerators across the country. The first one will be set up in Bengaluru soon. Apart from Thiruvananthapuram, Oracle plans to set up incubators in Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Gurgaon, Noida, Hyderabad and Vijayawada.

Announcing this in Mumbai the other day, Oracle president Thomas Kurian had said that the incubators were being set up with the objective of making Cloud technology accessible to all aspirants. Mentoring would also be a key component of the facilities.

The state is awaiting a formal communication from the IT major in this regard. “We came across the plans by Oracle to setup an incubator in Thiruvananthapuram, which is a very positive development. Once we receive formal communication from Oracle in this regard, necessary steps would be taken to offer space and other infrastructure,” additional chief secretary (Information Technology) Mr. P H Kurian said.

The state’s start-up sector is considering Oracle's move as a fillip to the state's start up sector. “As we are targeting to have 10,000 by 2020, it is essential to have as many as incubators here.

Moreover, an incubator in the area of big data by Oracle would be a very positive development for the state's start-up initiatives," said Startup Village founder chairman Sanjay Vijayakumar. Oracle at present has a development centre at Technopark.
