Kerala High Court steps in to secure Container Road

Takes up suo motu action, asks district collector to file report in 2 months.

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Friday initiated suo motu proceedings in the wake of frequent road accidents on the container road stretch in Kochi. It entrusted collector M.G. Rajamanickam to convene a meeting of all the stakeholders and file a report before the court in two months’ time.

A division bench comprising Justice K.T. Sankaran and Justice K.P. Jyothindranath initiated the proceedings after Justice P.N. Ravindran wrote to Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan pointing to the reports regarding the number of accidents on the road. Justice Ravindran said that unauthorized parking of container lorries and absence of lighting were the major reasons for the accidents.

Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan later placed the matter before a division bench and suo motu action was taken. The division bench on Friday asked the collector to convene a meeting of all the stakeholders, including National Highway Authority, Dubai Port World, Goshree Island Development Authority and secretaries of local bodies, Kalamassery, Mulavukadu and Cheranelloor. The court posted the case to May 31 and asked the collector to file a report on May 30.
