Pink Rally marks Women\'s Day in Vijayawada

HYDERABAD: Vijayawada Municipal Corporation organised a Pink Rally from Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium to Raghavaiah Park on Wednesday coinciding with the International Women’s Day.

Enthusiasts cycled and walked to Raghavaiah Park on the day after city mayor Rayana Bhagyalakshmi flagged them off from the municipal stadium. The mayor said women are excelling in various walks of life and sometimes even surpassing men due to their hard work.

Bhagyalakshmi advised parents to shun bias and educate their girls, as they are multitaskers and can handle several things and face challenges at a time.

Speaking on the occasion, VMC commissioner Swapnil Dinkar asked women to utilise the many welfare schemes that the government is implementing for women, including 50 percent reservations, free education from KG to PG and schemes like fee reimbursement.

Deputy mayor Bellam Durga, corporators Bheemireddy Siva Venkata Janareddy, Padigipati Chaitanya Reddy, Mylavarapu Ratnakumari and Sharwani Murthy, additional commissioners Y. Shyamala and K.V. Satyavathy, deputy city planner Zubin, officials and students from various schools participated in the function.

Pigeons were released to mark the 111th International Women’s Day.
