Women power peps up Kozhikode

International Women's Day celebrated with pomp and grandeur.

Kozhikode: Kozhikode City celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of programmes. One of the interesting ones was the one-act play ‘Pennu Pookkunnna Kaalam’ by Jayasneha.R, Directed by P.C Hareesh. Through the eyes of six noted women characters drawn from legends, fiction and history, the play portrayed events from the point of view of women. For a large number of connoisseurs gathered at Malabar Christian College Auditorium, the one-act play was a different experience.

The play staged as part of MCC Women’s Cell Women’s Day programme, portrayed Shurpanakha and her demonized form Thadaka from Vayalar’s ‘Thadakayenna Dravida Rajakumari’, Draupadi from Mahabharatam, Nangeli from the poem Poothappattu by Edasseri Govindan Nair , ‘Kurathi’ from Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan’s 'Kurathi' and Kuriyedathu Thathri-the historical character portrayed in ‘Oru Koodiyattathinte Katha’ by M Govindan. The play questions the myths and history which glorified men’s act against women’s and portraying women in a bad light. The play also connects viewers to the present world where women are still facing discrimination and atrocities and refers to the Suryanelli rape victim. Jayasneha is a second year student in the College.

“Through the play I tried to put up a different aspect an aspect from the character’s side and not the popular side in the books written by men. The play wanted to convey the message that women should unite in order to face the threats against their race,” said director P C Hareesh. In other programmes, the NSS unit of JDT Islam College of Arts and Science organized a night marathon ‘Dauntless’.
