Chennai: Anti-theft app helps youth reclaim mobile
Chennai: Architecture student Sunaiz Rehman (20) from Royapettah was confident of getting his Lenovo K6 mobile back when a two-wheeler borne duo snatched it from him while he was walking near his residence on Sunday night.
Sunaiz, who did not get time to note the number plate of the bike of the robbers, got an email from his pre-loaded security App McAfee, which wanted to know whether his mobile was still in safe hands or had been stolen.
After he reported the mobile had been stolen, the App started sharing the pictures of the suspects who were using the mobile along with the locations where it was presently kept.
Sunaiz preferred a complaint with Royapettah police providing all the available info including location and pictures of the suspects. Through the App, Sunaiz received three locations, two in Triplicane and one in Parrys as and when the suspects switched on the mobile.
The robbery and the subsequent crucial details provided by Sunaiz was brought to the knowledge of the DCP Mylapore, V. Balakrishnan, who assigned two cops, sub-inspector Akilanraj and constable Sugumaran, to crack the case.
Sources said Sunaiz and the two cops were in touch and managed to identify the duo involved in the theft. The robbers were caught near P.M. Dargah in Triplicane and were identified as Mohammed Abis (19), of Dargah 5th street and Hussain Babu (19), of Dargah 4th street, late on Monday.
The duo had already disposed of the mobile for Rs 4,000 in the afternoon and the same was recovered from the buyer. Preliminary investigations revealed the duo to have snatched at least 5 mobile phones in similar fashion during the last week.
Balakrishnan appreciated the cops for cracking the case within a day’s time and Sunaiz for making use of the security App to trace his lost mobile. “Similar anti-theft apps can come in handy to trace the stolen mobile phones, if activated”, a senior police official said.
