Crew safe after cargo barge capsizes at Kakinada port

The crew were loading rice onto a ship when water entered the barge

Vijayawada: A cargo barge capsized at the Kakinada anchorage port in the early hours of Sunday. All the 20 crew members on board were safe.

The mishap occurred when rice was about to be loaded into the ship. As the height of the barge was low, water entered into the barge, tipping it over.

According to eyewitnesses, the crew climbed on to the ship as the barge turned over. The cargo carrying capacity of the barge was originally 350 tons. Recently, it was enhanced to 600 tons without making the necessary changes in dimensions.

Kakinada is the only port in the state where operations are carried out from both deep water port and anchorage port. Cargo, mostly rice, is carried on barges and loaded into ships anchored at sea.
