Building houses for have-nots
KOCHI/THRISSSUR: These students believe in giving it back to society as they learn new lessons from the texts. Students, staff and the management of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kannamly in Kochi and NSS volunteers of Govt Vocational Higher Secondary School for Girls, Thrissur, have built homes for the homeless making it clear that they have serious concern for those who are suffering.
The Chinmaya family built the first house at Kalathara for Sabu, a fisherman. The key of the house ‘Chinmayam’ was handed over to Mr. Sabu on Wednesday in the presence of the school secretary Kuttappan Menon and principal Asha Radhkrishnan, by Swami Viviktananda Saraswathi, the regional head of Chinmaya Mission. Mr Rajesh Patel, (president, Chinmaya Vidyalaya) and Ms Mercy Josy (president, Chellanam grama pachayath) were present.
The NSS volunteers of GVHSS for Girls, Thrissur, are making the house for a visually impaired and deaf couple couple. Mr Rajan is totally blind and wife Ms. Girija is deaf and they were living in a dilapidated house in Cherupu, Thrissur. The volunteers have vowed that the childless couple will have a house before they appear for this year's final examinations. They started by depositing every penny in a special account and conducted a musical fund-raiser on the campus. They also made and sold hand wash, dish wash, washing powder, handicrafts, LED bulbs and glass paintings. They also engaged in clothe embossing, collection and selling of e-waste and plastic and mehandi designing. They have already spent more than Rs 3 lakh with concrete roofing of the house over with the active involvement of 20 volunteers in it.
"The staff, students and public wholeheartedly supported the noble venture" said Ms. Dhanya Joseph, NSS programme officer of the school. The programme was co-ordinated by NSS volunteer secretary Ms. Divya V T., teaching staff co-ordinator Mr. Praveen K. and Ms. Dhanya Joseph.
