Supreme Court plea and other options

Waiting for a whole year and preparing for an exam with a new syllabus may not attract NRI students, she felt.

Hyderabad: The new Neet rule might prompt NRI students to look for other options, Spandana Narvaneni, an NRI student pursuing MBBS at a leading private medical college in Hyderabad, said.

Waiting for a whole year and preparing for an exam with a new syllabus may not attract NRI students, she felt.

“It was quite difficult for me to adjust on the academic front in my first year. I had to put in extra efforts with friends and well-wishers helping me,” she said.

NRI families may approach the Supreme Court to seek relaxation from the rule, according to colleges’ association. “The feedback we got from NRI parents was that they would bring to the court’s notice the serious disadvantages NRI students were in, due to the new test,” an association official said.

The Neet eligibility requirement has hit NRI admissions in private medical colleges. NRI students who came for first-year UG admissions had to return disappointed, and colleges had to scout for prospective students who had cleared Neet and were ready to pay the high fees.

With not many students available, colleges for the first time had to settle for yearly fees unlike earlier when a fee package for the entire duration of the study was considered.
