Visakhapatnam: Residents evicted from crumbling buildings

The housing complex built over four decades ago has been in a dilapidated and precarious condition due to poor maintenance.

Visakhapatnam: Tension prevailed during an eviction drive by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) at a housing complex in Chilakapeta on Thursday.

The housing complex built over four decades ago has been in a dilapidated and precarious condition due to poor maintenance. The staircases were damaged in some of the 68 houses.

The residents were provided a temporary accommodation near Madeenabagh near Steel Plant. The GVMC will start construction work and hand over the new houses to the residents free of cost. The residents had initially opposed the move and had refused to vacate the place but the GVMC officials counselled them of the dangers of staying in the structure.

GVMC Commissioner M. Hari Narayanan said "We will construct new houses for the evacuees under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The colony will be transformed into a model colony."
