Thiruvananthapuram: The heaviest rain of the season led to waterlogging at around a dozen localities in the capital city on Thursday morning. On the outskirts, a 13-year-old student was injured at Madavoor near Pallickal when the compound wall of his school collapsed on him. The injured student is identified as Gautam Krishna, a student of NSS Higher Secondary School, Madavoor. A house was destroyed at Nandiyode while the unidentified body of a man was found in the river at Karamana.
In the morning, those who arrived at Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station were taken by surprise as Thampanoor and adjacent areas like SS Koil road were marooned for around an hour. The Amayizhanjan canal which was clogged by waste did not drain quickly. The ground floor of Canara Bank at Statue and Primary Health Care centre at Rajajinagar were flooded. Water seeped into the generator room at the Secretariat also.
Similarly, Yamunanagar at Kuriyathi, parts of Chalai, Aksharaveethi at Pettah, Ganga Nagar at Kamaleswaram experienced flooding that receded only several hours later. There was flooding along the sides of Kazhakoottam- Kovalam bypass at areas like Anayara. The vicinity of Lords hospital at Karikkakom was also flooded. The house destroyed at Nandiyode was identified as that of Ajith Singh of Payattadi. No one was injured as the family was away for a wedding. Elsewhere at Palode, paddy fields and tapioca plantations reported crop loss.
