Reformist nun Lucy expelled

She had participated in agitation of nuns demanding Franco’s arrest.

Wayanad: Sr Lucy Kalappurakkal, the nun from Wayanad who had participated in the agitation of nuns demanding the arrest of Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal has been expelled from the congregation.

Sr Lucy received the order from the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) superior general through the provincial superior of Mananthavady region on Tuesday evening.

The decision was taken by the general council of FCC held in New Delhi which has the ratification of Vatican office in the national capital and also the apostolic nunciature.

Earlier an attempt by the church to keep her off the parish duties had infuriated the believers who barged into the parish hall registering their protest.

According to the order of the congregation, Sr Lucy had violated the mandatory vows for nuns, including poverty and obedience.

Other charges are she bought a car on her own, refused to submit the salary as a teacher to the convent, participated in public forums including media discussions without permission, arrives late at the convent, finds fault with the church in key issues and appear in public without wearing the nun's uniform.

According to Sr Ann Joseph, FCC superior general, the congregation was forced to expel her she continued the way of life challenging the show-cause notice to explain her rebellious way of life. None of her explanations was satisfactory to the superiors, she said.

Meanwhile, Sr Kalappurayil told reporters here that the decision of the congregation is cent per cent wrong.

"I am sure the believers who love truth in the congregation would come up for her help,'' she added.
