Kerala: MBBS admission on course

CEE must finish admission process by August 27 as per apex court order.

KOCHI: The Commissioner of Entrance Examinations (CEE) is set to start the second round allotment process for medical colleges on Tuesday or Wednesday even as the Kerala High Court heard the argument of counsel for the Kerala Private Medical College Manag-ement Association in the admission case on Monday. The court will hear the other parties in the coming days and is expected to pronounce the verdict this week as directed by the Supreme Court. CEE Dr M.T. Reju told this newspaper that there was no bar on starting the allotment process and the apex court had only said about completing the process after the High Court pronounced the verdict.

As per the SC order, the CEE has to finish the process by August 27. He also said that in the first phase of the second allotment, the options would be invited from the students. “The second allotment is for government and private colleges. If any college is found not meeting the requirement for getting included in the process, that college will be excluded,” Mr Reju added. The CEE also said that no clarity had so far emerged from the government side on apportioning seats for students eligible to receive scholarships from the Rs 5 lakh separated from each NRI seat fee.

Meanwhile, barring MES, no other college has signed an agreement with the state government for differential fee structure starting with Rs 25,000 for BPL students. Others are keeping their fingers crossed on the verdict in the pending case in the HC in this regard. Some of them have challenged the Rs 5 lakh fee fixed by the Justice Rajendra Babu Committee for 85 per cent seats while almost nine colleges had shown willingness to sign an agreement with the state for differential fee structure.
