Friends of Police done away with
Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government issued an order rescinding a 1994 order ‘extending the Friends of Police Movement’ to the entire State.
The latest GO was issued on Wednesday ‘In view of the adverse report received from the Director General of Police, Chennai’ dated July 6.
Friends of Police (FOP), an organization of people outside the police department, was formed to help the police in its various activities locally all over the State.
FOP came under a critical scanner following the custodial death of Jayaraj and Bennix in Sathankulam on June 22 and 23, as some of its members were allegedly involved in the torture of the father and son inside the police station.
Due to the hue and cry raised by activists and civil society, questioning the role of FOP in policing activities, the department immediately issued an order banning their use in many policing activities.
However, on Wednesday the GO was issued doing away with the FOP movement totally.
