No clean chit to Dileep: T P Senkumar

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in the city on Friday, Mr Senkumar said his comment on the case was distorted by the media.

Kochi: Former state police chief T.P. Senkumar has denied suggestions that he had given a clean chit to actor Dileep in the case connected with the abduction and sexual assault of a female actor in Kochi. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a seminar in the city on Friday, Mr Senkumar said his comment on the case was distorted by the media. Saying that he was only referring to the mode of investigation, the former DGP said the investigation team should have gathered enough evidence before conducting a marathon interrogation of prominent individuals that lasted 13 hours.

The persons should have been confronted with evidence forcing them to admit or deny, he said. The interrogation without such primary work would not be of much use, he added. “There might have been doubts,” he said. “But doubts are no substitute for evidence admissible in a court of law.” Mr Senkumar said according to his knowledge the government had not adversely interfered in the case other than giving a direction to reveal the truth.

He however called for a probe into the complaint that an ADGP held meting a person under the cloud of suspicion on June 26. He also iterated that the head of the investigation team should have been present during the interrogation of prominent persons. On his reported comment that ADGP B. Sandhya was engaged in publicity stunt, Mr Senkumar said that it was a personal-level remark with the interviewer that was not supposed to be aired. The former DGP also said he had reasons to suspect that a caucus comprising chief secretary Nalini Netto and ADGP Tomin Thachankary and personal secretary involved in misleading the chief Minister. He also said his pension papers had been withheld by a higher-ranked officer and he may have to wage another legal battle to set things right.
