Kozhikode: Lab to face action for infecting' teen with HIV

The report also spread fear among the nursing staff who attended the treatment procedures.

KOZHIKODE: The health department has made it clear that it will initiate strict action against a clinical laboratory at Medical College Hospital premises in Kozhikode for giving a false report to a teenager that he is HIV positive. The youth who had come for the treatment of hemophilia at the Medical College Hospital had approached the private medical laboratory as the MCH laboratory was closed.

“We are awaiting complaint from the youth,” DMO Dr Asha Devi told reporters. The youth, a native of Malappuram, and his kith and kin were shocked when they received the test report. However, the doctor at MCH expressed doubts on the results and directed the relatives to go for a fresh test, which proved negative. The report also spread fear among the nursing staff who attended the treatment procedures. Meanwhile, the laboratory authorities have approached the youth and relatives apologising for the errors and also offered compensation. The health department insists that they would be able to take action only if there is a complaint from the victim.
