Kozhikode: ABVP forced us to shut, say schools
KOZHIKODE: Schools in the district complained to the education department against ABVP activists on Friday forcefully closing down schools including lower primary schools, that were kept open despite the protest called by them. The protest was called by ABVP against the fee hike by the self-financing colleges in the State and also the Government’s neglect of the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) students.
The teachers and school managements raised complaints that the protestors showed no mercy even destroying food materials meant for the afternoon meal of the students. Even the lower primary schools were forcefully closed down by the protesters, some of the school teachers said. “This is the fifth education strike called by students unions of various political parties in the last one month. Since the protest was called all of a sudden, we were unaware whether the students reached their homes safely, especially the lower primary students”, said Janaki Prakash, faculty at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nadakkavu.
She added that if the students union keeps on closing down schools, students would be losing out on academics. “Since Government schools somehow manage to get some infrastructure, we don’t provoke the protestors by stopping them, as they damages these facilities all the time. We don’t want to put the academic future of students at stake,” she added.
