Kochi: Container lorry crew threaten to launch stir

The stretch, where street lights are yet to be set up, witnessed close to 300 mishaps in 2016.

Kochi: Container lorry employees have threatened to launch a strike over the recent order of district collector Muhammed Y. Safirulla banning parking on both sides of the over 17-km long Container Road stretch. “There are nearly 1,500 container trailers operating out of the International Container Transhipment Terminal, Vallarpadam. However, parking facility and other basic amenities like rest room are yet to be provided despite making promises several times. Nearly 3,000 trailer employees will participate in the strike,” said P. S. Ashique, chairman, Trade Union Co-ordination Committee.

The district collector had on Wednesday issued a ban order saying that a parking lot at the three-acre land of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd was readied near Vallarpadam where 75 container lorries can be parked at a time. The stretch, where street lights are yet to be set up, witnessed close to 300 mishaps in 2016.
