Kerala motor vehicle department special inspection drive yields Rs 4 lakh in fines

The drive was conducted as part of enforcement of SC committee guidelines on road safety.

Kochi: The motor vehicle department (MVD) on Friday carried out a special vehicle inspection drive in the district, the first major one conducted as part of enforcement of the recent Supreme Court Committee guidelines on road safety. “While the licence of 15 drivers were seized and recommended for suspension for offences including overloading, talking on phone while driving, signal violation and drunken driving, a fine amount to the tune of Rs 4,01,050 was collected for various other traffic offences,” said a senior MVD officer.

The special squad was led by Ernakulam deputy transport commissioner K. G. Samuel and flying squad motor vehicle inspector Jebi Cherian. “A total of 387 vehicles were inspected and a fine of Rs 4,01,050 was collected. Nearly 40 officers, including the mobile squad personnel drawn from the Idukki and Kottayam districts, took part in the drive which will continue in the coming days too,” he said. The licence suspension for the offences is part of strict enforcement as suggested by the apex court committee. “Similar drives will be conducted in the Kottayam and Idukki districts too within a month as per a special direction by the transport commissioner,” the officer said.
