Bengaluru: Gaiety, fervour marks Eid celebration

Thousands of people thronged the mosque in the early hours to offer Eid namaz'.

Bengaluru: Dressed in brand new clothes, Muslim men, women and children across the city celebrated Eid with gaiety and fervour on Thursday. The end of the holy month of Ramzan, involving fasting and prayers, came to end with the sighting of the new moon on Wednesday evening. While some parts of the country celebrated Eid on Wednesday, it was celebrated a day later in Karnataka and many other states.

Thousands of people thronged the mosque in the early hours to offer Eid ‘namaz’. After prayers it was all about meeting relatives and binging on biryani during the day.

“The day is all about wearing good clothes and eating some great food. And with our friends and extended family members joining us for lunch, Eid lunch is the most anticipated part of the celebrations,” said Salma Khaleel, an industrialist.

Confusion over holiday
Although many schools, colleges and offices had declared a holiday on Wednesday, there was no clarity on the exact day of Eid until late Wednesday night. As a result, many schools and offices, which declared a holiday earlier, sent out messages and emails to their students and employees, informing them about the change in holiday plan. Some tech firms like Honeywell, which declared a holiday on Wednesday, did not make any change in plans. Many popular schools too followed the same. However, the state government offices remained closed only on Thursday.
