Contractor blacklisted for Madhapur tragedy
Hyderabad: Two years after a manhole at Madhapur swallowed four persons , the state government on Friday blacklisted the contractor — G.S.R. Santhosh — and asked the city sewerage agency to strip off the contract .
This is the first time that the government has taken a stern action against private contractor. Three workers and one passer-by died in a manhole at Ayyappa Society in Madhapur in 2014.
They died of asphyxiation caused due to excess emanation of methane gas while cleaning a deep manhole. A passer-by, who tried to help the labourers, too died. G.S.R. Santhosh was allocated works to lay sewer pipeline of – 800 metres, in Ayyappa Society, Madhapur.
The contractor appointed three labourers — Pallapu Satyanarayana, 42, Pallapu Srinivas and adda coolie Oorsu Nagesh, 35, to clean the drain. They died soon after getting into the manhole due to suffocation caused by poisonous gas.
Satyanarayana, Srinivas and Nagesh hailed from Manikeshwarnagar near the Osmania University. The passer-by, Gangadhar Reddy, 31, belonged to Parvathinagar of Borabanda, who jumped in to save the three. Gangadhar Reddy too died of suffocation.
