KOZHIKODE: The heat, dust and extreme sunlight during the summer have led to an increase in the sales of sun glasses, stylish ones at that, in the last month as more people seek to protect their eyes from UV rays.
“People who go out are aware of the dangers the present climate could pose to their eyes and hence opt for sunglasses with 100 per cent UV protection,” said N.P. Vijayan, a staff at an optical shop in the city. Even doctors these days recommend polycarbonate lenses which offer full protection for eyes from the scorching sun.
The youngsters also join the bandwagon, making glasses a style statement as well. “All these factors have led to the increase of sales in sunglasses,” Mr Vijayan said. “Normally we sell up to 200 glasses a month priced at Rs 300 and above,” said Ismail Ahammed of another shop.
“Now we sell up to 500 sunglasses a month.” Most people go in for branded ones, he said. “As the summer advances, it is essential that we keep our eyes healthy from the scorching heat and the only option is to go for good sun glasses,” said Swarna Unnikrishnan, a city resident. “I had a problem wearing sunglasses initially but I am forced to wear them.”
