Jishnu Pranoy death: A mother's stand puts government in a fix
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The LDF government is facing a piquant situation with the parents of Jishnu Pranoy sticking on to their stand to continue their agitation until action is taken against police officials for the alleged assault on them and the arrest of those accused in the suicide case of the first year B.Tech student. Despite efforts by tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran to convince them that the government was taking sincere efforts in nabbing the accused in Jishnu's death case, Jishnu's mother Mahija and her brother Sreejith remained unchanged from their plan to continue the fast and shift the venue to the police headquarters once they were discharged.
Soon after Mahija told a section of media on Friday morning that she would continue with her stir, Mr. Surendren visited her as well as her brother Sreejith at the medical college hospital. But even after the talks, Mahija stuck to her earlier stand to go ahead with the stir. “We will walk to police headquarters. If the police stops us, we will sit on the side of the road without causing any difficulty to the public," Sreejith said. The government is of the view that use of any sort of force against Jishnu's parents may cause further damage to the government. The fact that Jishnu's family is pro-CPM and they had not yet criticised the government is also a matter of concern for the LFF top brass.
Sources said that the government’s plan to wriggle out of the situation would be to delay the discharge of Mahija and her brother from the hospital and in the meantime expedite steps to arrest the three more wanted in connection with Jishnu's death case. The government may also consider some namesake action against the cops in connection with the melee near the police headquarters. It is leant that IG (Thiruvananthapuram-range) Manoj Abraham who was supposed to furnish a detailed report on the incident to the state police chief on Friday would do so only by next week after probing into a suspected conspiracy by the SUCI activists and other activist who were with Jishnu's parents on Wednesday.
