Elephant kills two mahouts at Padanilapady
Kottayam: An elephant ran amok and killed his two mahouts when it was taken to a property at Padanilapady near Karukachal Thursday afternoon to move woods. Channanikad Rajan, 45, owned by Sasikumar of Channanikadu, stabbed the first mahout Gopinathan Nair, 68, with its tusks and raised the second mahout Kannan alias Akhil, 26, on its trunk and beaten to death.
Mr Nair, who is the mahout of the elephant for more than eight years, succumbed to injuries on the spot while Kannan died after reaching the Kottayam Medical College Hospital.
The elephant ran for some four km on the Poothrapally-Palamattam road and destroyed a car parked on the roadside before being tranquilized by the elephant squad led by veterinary surgeon Dr Sabu C. Isac around 3.45 pm.
The body of the victims were sent for the post-mortem to be held on Friday. Mr Nair belongs to Santhosh Bhavanam at Shanthipuram near Karukachal and
Kannan to Chiravumuttam at Kurichy.
