Shamna Tasnim death: Crime Branch gets one more month
KOCHI: Kerala State Human Rights Commission acting chairman P. Mohana Das on Tuesday sanctioned one more month to the Crime Branch to submit the final investigation report in the death of medico Shamna Tasneem. This decision was taken after the Crime Branch DySP K A Sasidharan submitted an interim report before the Commission at its sitting at Ernakulam District Collectorate on Tuesday. The DySP submitted that he is yet to record the witnesses’ statement fully and has to seize more documents and elicit opinion of experts also.
He also said that Section 164 statements too have to be perused to fix medical negligence and other offences in the case. The Commission directed police to conduct an independent investigation on the report of the doctors also. Shamna’s father K A Abootty personally appeared before the commission on Tuesday. The Crime Branch in its report informed the HR panel acting chief that a letter was served on the principal of the medical college where Shamna was treated to produce the details of the doctors including house surgeons who treated Shamna.
“But the Principal of the institution replied in a casual manner that ‘the house surgeon who treated Kum Shamna on her first visit to the casualty has not written her/his name in the copy of the casualty slip provided.’ The reply of principal is herewith enclosed (as annexure-5). This shows that a pure violation of existing standing orders and lack of supervision on the part of superiors,” the DySP said. He also said that he has told the Director of Health Services heading the apex body that investigates medical negligence in the case that he will present more evidence collected during his investigation before it so as to help it arrive at a conclusion.
