Hyderabad: Rs 75 lakh worth foreign liquor seized
Hyderabad: The task force of the prohibition and excise department on Sunday seized foreign liquor worth Rs 75 lakh.
Eight members of the gang, including the kingpin Harish Singh, was arrested.
Harish Singh is leading a ten member syndicate involved in smuggling and sale of the contraband.
Akun Sabharwal, director (enforcement), said that Harish Singh had been reportedly smuggling foreign liquor via the Chennai sea and air route.
“The man was smuggling up to 900 bottles a month worth Rs 50 lakh and selling it to people in and around the city. Our teams were tracking down the syndicate for last four months,” said Mr Sabharwal.
The accused has confessed to his involvement in eight cases registered against him in the state. Two days ago, the task force arrested one Shiva Patil in a case relating to foreign liquor smuggling.
Officials said that there is no guarantee that the liquor being passed off as foreign liquor by organised gangs is smuggled from foreign countries or simply is spurious liquor packed in branded bottles.
