Puducherry: Normal life in the state came to a standstill in the Union Territory following the death of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.

Shops and business establishments downed their shutters and buses, auto rickshaws were off the roads. Roads wore a deserted look, indicating the silent tribute paid by the people to its dynamic leader.

Schools and colleges were closed on Tuesday to mourn the death of Ms Jayalalithaa. The government announced a holiday for the day under the Negotiable Instruments Act and a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader.

An official statement here said, the national flag will fly at half-mast for three days and there will not be any official programmes during the mourning period.
