Most cabs in Hyderabad are unregistered
Hyderabad: Of the 50,000 cabs operating in Greater Hyderabad only 20,000 have registered with the cab registration process, posing a threat to passengers. The registration of cabs which aims at making cabs safe was introduced in Cyberabad after the Abhaya incident in 2013, in which a techie was raped by two men who offered a lift to her. Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagawat said they started the programme to ensure passenger safety. A cab with the cab registration sticker is seen as a safe one by passengers as all details of the cab and the driver are registered with the police.
The Rachakonda police who launched cab registration on Tuesday along with the Society for Cyberabad Security Council distributed cab registration stickers to 100 cabs at the LB Nagar cab registration booth. The commissioner said the main aim of the initiative was to ensure passenger safety. “If a cab has this registration sticker passengers feel it is safe. After starting this process techies, especially women, using cabs are looking for the sticker and only then hiring cabs,” Mr Bhagawat said.
Addressing cab drivers he said that they help in building the image of the city and their behaviour towards passengers, especially tourists, should be pleasing. He added that drivers play an important role in ensuring the safety of passengers and added that in addition to safety, honesty is the key. “We gave them a few tips on how to handle passengers, especially when they forget valuables in the cab. We have already rewarded two drivers for honestly returning the valuables of passengers which they forgot in their cabs,” he said.
