Suicide bid on Central University of Kerala campus

The university later conducted many appointments, but did not consider them, the protesters alleged.

KOZHIKODE: As many as 16 families who were evicted during the land acquisition for Central University of Kerala (CUK), staged a protest by threatening to commit suicide in the university’s newly constructed women’s hostel on Thursday. They alleged that they were promised jobs in CUK when the university started functioning, but so far only three persons were given job and the rest ignored. The university later conducted many appointments, but did not consider them, the protesters alleged.

However, after the RDO, Kanhangad DySP and CUK registrar held talks with them, they agreed to withdraw protest. The university promised to consider their demands and arrange time for them to submit a memorandum to HRD minister for state Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey who will be visiting to inaugurate new hostels wings of CUK on October 8. On October 15, a detailed talk will be held in presence of vice-chancellor G. Gopakumar who is presently out of station.
