Kerala tourism wing focuses on hygiene, safety

Green Carpet campaign to back sustainable destinations

KOZHIKODE: To make all the major and minor tourist destinations in Malabar attractive and hygienic apart from ensuring safety, the Kerala Tourism Department has joined hands with the Blooming Calicut initiative to bring significant changes in the sector. The project is initiated by Kerala Tourism Department as part of its Green Carpet campaign, a mission to make tourist destinations ready to receive the tourists and build a sustainable destination management system.

As part of the project, the major focus will be to construct more toilet facilities at tourist destinations in the Malabar region. Talking about the initiative, the Malabar region Green Carpet campaign coordinator Nasar Ali said, “When the initiative was designed, the highlight was to construct a clean and hygienic environment at tourist destinations along with a scientific system for collection and management of solid waste.”

“Hence, when our focus comes to the Malabar region, the mission will be the same and first stage of work will start by constructing comfort stations in the identified centres that will have all the facilities including toilet, washroom and proper waste collection system. Napkin burners will also be provided along with this. Our prime motto is also to build a safer environment for tourists. That is why CCTV surveillance system monitored by the police department will also be installed. All these works will be carried out by the Blooming Calicut team here,” he added.

The project will collaborate with Kudumbashree units to ensure to supply hygienic food to visitors, especially in tourists destinations with no proper restaurant or hotel facility. Improved accessibility and well-maintained lighting system, pathways, signage are other facilities to come up.
