DCA officials launch statewide drive against counterfeit drugs

VIJAYAWADA: Officials from the drug control administration detected some counterfeit drugs, recalled them from stockists and drug stores and sent them to the drugs control lab for analysis.

The authorities said that counterfeit drugs meant to treat fever, blood pressure, blood sugar and other health problems were manufactured in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and other states in north India and routed to Hyderabad, Vijayawada and other parts in Andhra Pradesh.

Though the Malakpet police detected such drugs in July, they did not go further into the issue. However, when they were noticed here, drug control officials began hunting for the source and issued directions for their recall.

Cases have been booked in Vijayawada, Guntur and other parts of the state.

The DCA authorities are carrying out a state-wide drive to detect such counterfeit drugs and take the culprits to task. Nearly 10 brands of such counterfeit drugs were found so far.

Counterfeit drugs are sold in the name of popular brands. However, unless lab reports are available, it cannot be ascertained whether they are of spurious or ‘not of standard’ quality.
