Flood in Karimnagar-Gangula due to Kaleshwaram project, says minister

No casualty was reported so far because prior steps were taken by the municipal, revenue, police, irrigation and water works departments

Karimnagar: The towns across the united Karimnagar district and several colonies under Karimnagar municipal corporation limits are inundated due to the Kaleshwaram project, the Backward Classes welfare minister Gangula Kamalakar said here on Tuesday.

The minister's observation is seen against the general belief that the cities and towns are inundated due to improper drainage system, encroachment of nalas, lakes and tanks.

He said the ground water levels in the united Karimnagar district increased enormously in recent times because of the Kaleshwaram project. "This is leading to the submerging of villages, towns and colonies in the city even when there is a mild rainfall. The rain water is not percolating down to the ground," he said.

Accompanied by city mayor Sunil Rao, the minister inspected the areas affected by flooding in Karimnagar city.
